Meadowsweet – Filipendula ulmaria

Plant : Meadowsweet grows in abundance in rural Northumberland, particularly in damp areas, including hedgerows, meadows and shrub land.  Many types of bees and other pollinators find it attractive.  It can grow in large patches and up to 1.2 m tall.  It is a member of the Rosaceae family and flowers between June and September.

Flower : The top parts of the branched stems become covered with small white flowers.  The stamens of the flowers protrude well beyond the white petals, giving the dense patches of flowers a fluffy appearance.  The flower is typical of the Rosaceae family, with five petals and approximately 20 stamen.
