Bird Cherry – Prunus padus
Plant : Bird Cherry is native to Northumberland and prefers damp woodland areas. It is a large tree and can grow to 20m in height. It can be a good source of forage for honey bees in spring and flowers, at a similar time to autumn sown Oilseed rape.
Flower : Its flowers grow in 10cm to 20cm long racemes, which may be dropping or upright. Each flower is typical of the Rosaceae family, with five white petals, numerous stamen and is 25mm across.
